The History of Hanukkah (Chanukah)

Next Sunday kicks off this year’s Hanukkah (Chanukah) celebration. This 8-day Festival of Lights commemorates the victory of the ancient Israelites over the Syrian Greek army and the subsequent miracle of restoring the menorah in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Families will celebrate this special time by lighting the menorah each night, playing dreidel games, giving gifts, reciting traditional prayers and eating foods unique to this holiday.
